A new European social media platform, W, is set to launch, aiming to attract users away from established giants like Elon Musk's X by emphasizing European tech sovereignty, data control, and human-centric interaction.
As Europe increasingly advocates for greater technological independence, a new social network named W believes it possesses the unique appeal to draw users from other platforms: its distinctly European identity. Positioned as a direct competitor to Elon Musk's X, the platform was initially announced in January and is expected to become publicly available by invitation in the coming days and weeks.
During a launch event held in Brussels, the company highlighted its early adoption by prominent figures, including EU chiefs Ursula von der Leyen and Antonio Costa, European Central Bank head Christine Lagarde, as well as various EU institutions and media organizations.
Headquartered in Sweden, W boasts a diverse group of investors, comprising entrepreneurs and executives from across Europe, including Britain, France, and Switzerland. CEO Anna Zeiter confirmed that the platform's technical development team is based in Ukraine.
Zeiter articulated the company's vision to cultivate a digital space where human interaction takes precedence over AI bots, all while operating under European regulatory control. "Social media platforms often originate from outside Europe. We are effectively relinquishing revenue, our data, and our attention," she stated, underscoring the importance of a European alternative.
W is not the sole emerging network seeking to capitalize on growing transatlantic tensions, particularly since the return of former US President Donald Trump last year. Other nascent European platforms include Bulle (French for "bubble"), Eurosky, Monnett – a hybrid platform combining elements of TikTok and Instagram, slated for a July release – and eYou.
According to data from the EU, the most widely used social networks in Europe are Meta's Facebook and Instagram, with 259 million monthly users. Chinese-owned TikTok follows with 135.9 million monthly users, while X records approximately 115.1 million users.
