As Switzerland grapples with soaring temperatures and official heat warnings, meteorologists provide an outlook on how long the sweltering conditions are expected to last.
Switzerland is currently experiencing a significant heatwave, with temperatures climbing to near-record levels and residents enduring uncomfortable 'tropical nights.' On Thursday, thermometers in Sion reached approximately 35C, while Zurich saw temperatures exceed 33C.
MeteoSwiss, the national weather service, has issued level 3 and 4 heat warnings. While these alerts are officially valid until Tuesday, June 23rd, experts suggest the heat is likely to persist until at least June 27th. Forecasts indicate that temperatures between 34C and 35C will remain common across the country into next week, particularly in western and southern regions.
Meteorologist Melanie Ruosch noted that while June heatwaves are not unprecedented—with similar events occurring in 2017, 2019, 2022, and 2025—this current spell could become exceptional if it extends beyond a week. There is even a possibility that the historic June record of 36.9C, set in Basel-Binningen in 1947, could be challenged, with some models predicting peaks of up to 38C.
As the country braces for further heat, southern regions may also experience localized thunderstorms. MeteoSwiss defines a heatwave as at least three consecutive days with a mean daily temperature of 25C or higher, a threshold currently being met across much of the nation.
